| Description : | In the beginning there was Detroit (or more accurately, Dearborn). Then, spread across the city in 1992, came Gravitar. Originally a quartet playing drums, guitar, and vox (of a supremely inhuman sort, true), this freeform deathnoisejazz outfit has gradually mutated into a trio playing drums, guitar, horns, and (still deranged) vox. After three official releases on San Francisco's Charnel House and a slew of 'unofficial' cassettes, LPs and CDs from other sources, the band went underground for a year or two to give the three members time to work on additional projects: guitarist Mike Walker with the band Gaffle, multi-instrumentalist Geoff Walker with the band Basket Case, and drummer Eric Cook with his solo project Persona. Now the band returns from hibernation with YOU MUST FIRST LEARN TO DRAW THE REAL, a full-length CD of synapse-frying ubernoise in full-tilt avant mode. 'You must first learn to draw the real' is a quote from the father of Gravitar's tag-team guitarists Mike and Geoff Walker. On this CD from Austin's Monotremata Records, the two Walkers and drummer Eric Cook bypass 'the real' entirely, leapfrogging over to some sort of frantic, abstract grab at what's left of rock music in the end of the 1990's. Think of Sun Ra, John Coltrane, High Rise, Mainliner, and the members of Black Sabbath slugging down firewater in the back of a forgotten cave while using saber-tooth tiger teeth for dice in a cosmic craps game. Gravitar battle the giant robots of deep space for the very soul of mutant improv free-jazz. Who will win? It is not for us to say, but we're placing our bets on the Destructiv Kommandos from Dearborn....But what about the sound? Contemplate lurid, acid-fried improv space rock irradiated with jagged canyons of noise and the 'soulful' death rattle of 'vocalist' Geoff Walker and know what it is to feel the terrified awe of the Elder Gods. Too noisy and freeform for indie-rock, too addicted to the big beat (however nebulous it may become) and the almighty riff for the noise purists, too violent and out of control for the easily spooked -- this is the lurching power of Gravitar. They could be the loudest free-rock band on the planet; in fact, they were the first band ever to get the cops out for a noise complaint at NYC's Knitting Factory.
