DESCRIPTION |
| | V/A Ahleuchatistas / FAT32 Label : Gaffer Records Year : 2010 Format : 10in Style : Rock / Experimental Availability : Out of stock
| | | | Description : | The latest split 10-inch vinyl release on the French label Gaffer Records packs a mean wallop, pairing instrumentals from the Asheville, NC band Ahleuchatistas with the Lyon, France two-person outfit FAT32; both groups demonstrate a compelling intensity but in two distinctly different ways. The impressive track from Ahleuchatistas, entitled 'Heraclitean', is the first release featuring the band's new configuration as a duo, featuring guitarist and founder Shane Perlowin and drummer Ryan Oslance. It begins with a disquieting low rumble of drums with a sustained wash of cymbal hits, underneath a queasy guitar that rolls around drunkenly on the floor, weaving between the left and right channels. Repeated guitar notes squeal, leading to the sounds of a pummeled floor tom, seemingly barreling down a road.
A guitar line worthy of a spaghetti western soundtrack sets a new stage, bringing forth a sound-torrent; Oslance plays quick, tight patterns with rim shots, hi-hat taps, and bass drum kicks, punctuated with piercing bursts, while Perlowin plays his nimble, jittery Dick Dale-esque melodies. The duo steps up the intensity and tension, throwing even more manic guitar playing into the tornado, and although it's just a seven-minute song, it has the feeling of an epic, ranking among the band’s best work.
FAT32, featuring drummer Anto and keyboardist John, presents its own bundle of insanity in the form of the song 'Ziiion-Ponk [part01]'; it's a complicated number, bringing to mind certain avant-thrash-jazz bands, high-octane Japanese acts like Melt-Banana, and other intense twosomes like Lightning Bolt. John can make his keyboard sound like a speed-metal guitar, wailing and shredding unabashedly, and the track is a complicated string of tightly synchronized sequences, with Anto providing the right punch to the material. Patterns quickly emerge from seemingly random synth bloops, with injected samples like what sounds like a cartoon character voice, cat sounds, and a fragment from an Edith Piaf song. They plow through with a sustained frenzied pace and a reckless abandon, only to end the number with a rest period and a crystalline coda.
