| | | | Description : | Japanese musician Painjerk aka Kohei Gomi is often associated with the Japanese noise music scene. Gomi started home-recording in the 1980s and grew into the 1990s to become one of the most prolific and influential noise artists of the decade. But time does not stand still, and today his own description of his work is 'Exploration and practice of kinematics of electro-acoustics using unorthodox methodologies, mainly using live-electronics, synths and computers'.
Over the years Painjerk has collaborated with artists like Russell Haswell, Zbigniew Karkowski, T. Mikawa, F. Kosakai, MoE, Lasse Marhaug and many more. He has released albums on Harbinger Sound, Editions Mego, Alternative Tentacles Records, Hospital Productions, and not to mention; numerous legendary self releases on MC,DL and CDr.
As a true experimental musician Painjerk anno 2024 has moved on to new territories and new challenges. The harsh noise is no longer the main focus (if it ever was?), and his work with the chamber orchestra The Touchables shows that his musical talent and inspiration is wide, and has no borders.
The Touchables is a Norwegian chamber orchestra led by the bass player Guro Skumsnes Moe.
Moe is some kind of renaissance woman that tours the world with her rock band MoE, does acoustic noise with the group Sult, sings, plays electric-, contra- and octa-bass, writes music for movies and several theater companies, runs a record label and a distribution company, she is the founder of the cultural center Børsen Kulturhus that offers production facilities, recording and mixing studios and an art/sound residencies.
In The Touchables she works closely with composer and multi instrumentalist Ole-Henrik Moe, who's work is among the highest regarded in Europe. His understanding of instrumentation, arranging, and his ability to play and instruct microtonality makes him an important force in the ensemble. Ole-Henrik Moe is know from his work with Sunn O)), Ulver, Motorpsycho, MoE, Arditti Quartet, Sheriffs of Nothingness and more.
Gomi-san has a deep knowledge in contemporary music history and a great understanding of the creation of modern music. Dots Kinematics points both forward and backwards. Forwards in the sense that he no longer is preoccupied with noise, and backwards in the sense that you can hear inspiration from both David Tudor, Cage, Mika Vaino and more.
Gomi chose to work with The Touchables due to their unique instrumentation that includes an octobass and numerous other less usual low frequent instruments.
The piece was commissioned by The Touchables in 2017 and performed at Atelier Nord ANX in Oslo.
